Introducing the exhibition Koo Jeong A: OUSSSMOS. There are invisible yet pervasive forces that surround and inhabit our everyday reality. Held at the Leeum Museum of Art in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Koo Jeong A: OUSSSMOS awakens bodily awareness and spatial perception through non-visual phenomena such as gravity, light, scent, and sound.

The exhibition title ‘OUSSSMOS’ represents a portmanteau uniting ‘OUSSS’—a conceptual term devised by Koo Jeong A in the mid-1990s—with ‘COSMOS’ (the universe). Featuring approximately 35 works that range from her early 1990s output to major new commissions created specifically for Leeum, this presentation stands as the artist’s largest museum solo exhibition in Korea to date.

A Sensory Journey Extending from Venice

In 2024, Koo Jeong A represented the Korean Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with Odorama Cities, an acclaimed project exploring olfactory senses as artistic media. The olfactory investigations and select works introduced in Venice naturally extend into this Leeum solo retrospective. Bypassing an exclusive reliance on sight, the artist’s practice invites audiences to perceive the surrounding air, scent, and temperature across Korea’s premier private museum.

Encountering New Sensations Throughout the Museum

A defining hallmark of this exhibition is that it refuses to remain confined within standard contemporary gallery boundaries. Works are dispersed across the entire museum complex, making the visitor’s exploratory journey an essential part of completing the artistic experience.

Light and Form Emerging from Darkness

The phosphorescent curved structure Gravita in the main lobby and the 8-meter-wide newly commissioned work Möbius in Gallery M2 profoundly alter spatial perception. In particular, as ambient gallery lighting dims, the gradual emergence of phosphorescent glow—combined with diffusing scent and resonant soundscapes—prompts visitors to perceive space anew. Closing one’s eyes or adapting quietly to darkness allows subtle sensory dimensions to come to the forefront.

A Viewing Method Driven by Site Discovery

Interventions expand well past the contemporary M2 galleries into the entrance lobby, the traditional Korean art permanent collection rooms, and even narrow crevices along exterior retaining walls. Deviating from standard institutional flow, visitors uncover unannounced artworks nestled between classical artifacts or tucked within outdoor architectural elements, actively assembling the exhibition through personal discovery.
