A Decade-Long Trajectory and Meditations Originating in Venice

Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, this exhibition focuses on Georg Baselitz’s artistic trajectory over the past decade. Ever since the presentation of his pivotal Avignon series at the 56th Venice Biennale curated by Okwui Enwezor in 2015, Baselitz has persistently investigated questions of human vulnerability and corporeal transience.

At the heart of the presentation is the Shadows (Schatten) series, which was previously exhibited at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum in Istanbul, Turkey in 2024 and at the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum in Spain in 2025. This Seoul exhibition marks the first occasion where this internationally acclaimed museum series is introduced to audiences in Korea.

Monotype Paintings and Innovative Technical Mastery

The defining highlight across the galleries is Baselitz’s unique monotype technique, transferring printing ink and oil paint directly onto unprimed canvas linen. The exhibition space brings together works from the 2019 series Darkness Goldness alongside paintings from the 2020 Shadows (Schatten) cycle.

Through dramatic contrasts of gleaming gold pigments and deep velvety blacks, the compositions reveal Baselitz’s serious contemplation of existential time and human mortality. The tactile textures left by the transfer of printer’s ink and viscous oil onto raw canvas fabric offer an unforgettable painterly surface.
