The Songam Woodcraft Exhibition, whose Korean title refers to the breath of craftspeople within wood grain, runs from July 28 to November 15, 2026. It brings furniture, religious sculpture and architectural ornament into one free exhibition.

Three uses of one material
Follow the exhibition from wooden household objects and decorated furniture to Buddhist sculpture and architectural craft. A useful question is how the purpose of an object changes the way wood is worked. Storage, religious devotion and the shaping of a room each ask something different of the material.
What to look for
The official introduction lists around 50 objects, including Ganghwa chests, mother-of-pearl and hwagak furniture, seated Buddhist figures, lattice doors and dancheong decoration. Compare surface pattern with carved volume. Use the gallery labels to distinguish techniques rather than assuming every colorful surface is painted wood.
Craft in the present
Work by hwagak specialist Lee Jae-man, wood sculptor Lee Bang-ho and dancheong practitioner Jeong Seong-gil connects traditional techniques with living practice. Choose one object with your companion and discuss whether its color, form or intended use attracts you most. This is an editorial viewing suggestion, not a scheduled guided activity.
Plan a relaxed visit
Open 09:00–18:00, with admission ending at 17:30. Mondays are normally closed, except when they are public holidays; January 1 is also closed. Check special notices before travel.
