Mokpo Cultural Date Course: read objects through the sea
Start with the museum’s themes of underwater excavation and maritime exchange. Read where an object was recovered and consider how it might have related to people or cargo moving by sea. The labels provide evidence; avoid treating every vessel or ceramic as belonging to the same wreck.
Look at two different scales
Compare the structure of a large boat with the smaller utensils and ceramics described in the galleries. Each person can choose a construction detail and an object that prompts a question. The boat photograph is archival and does not guarantee that a particular display remains in the same position. Use the current gallery notices to choose what to see.
Continue with a natural form
Mokpo’s tourism office describes Gatbawi as naturally weathered rock formed from consolidated volcanic ash. A sea boardwalk provides a waterside angle on its hat-like shapes. Moving from constructed boats to a naturally shaped surface gives the itinerary a useful contrast. Read local legends separately from the geological explanation.
