Time Joined by Hands: A Mother’s Records, Her Daughters’ Memories is a touring exhibition at Gallery Iseo in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Presented by the Daegu Textile Museum, it traces one woman’s life through the records, clothes and sewing materials she left behind, viewed again through the memories of her daughters.
Im Young-hee (1922–2015), originally from Jinnampo in South Pyongan Province, lived through decades of separation from her birthplace. Her diaries and handmade clothing preserve both private family history and the texture of a changing era.

A life recorded through diaries and sewing
The exhibition centers on diaries, household account books and notebooks kept by Im Young-hee from 1946 to 2015. These written records appear alongside garments she made herself and other sewing-related materials. Together they show how daily documentation and handwork became practical ways to sustain family life and endure historical disruption.
According to the museum’s official introduction, writing and sewing were both means of conveying care for family. The daughters’ perspectives reorganize these belongings into six scenes, connecting an individual life with the wider period through which it passed.

Three threads running through the exhibition
- A personal record of an era: The diaries, account books and notebooks spanning nearly seventy years hold everyday decisions alongside the marks of social change.
- Clothing as family memory: Handmade garments and sewing materials preserve practical skill, domestic care and the passage of time.
- Making value from limited materials: Works made with old clothes and leftover fabric show an approach to reuse shaped by necessity and resourcefulness.
